Home Energy Professional Certifications

In conjunction with supporting the development of the Standard Work Specifications (SWS) for Home Energy Upgrades, the U.S. U.S. United States Department of Energy (DOE) collaborated with technicians and trainers from across the home performance industry to fund the development of high-quality, nationally recognized Home Energy Professional Certifications.

These new certifications are intended for experienced professionals and focus specifically on the four most common job classifications in the DOE Weatherization Assistance Program ( WAP WAP DOE Weatherization Assistance Program ) and home energy upgrade industry: Energy Auditor, Retrofit Installer Technician, Crew Leader, and Quality Control Inspector.

How Standard Work Specifications Relate to Job Task Analyses and Home Energy Professional Certifications

The SWS and the Home Energy Professional Certifications were developed in order to raise the bar in the weatherization and home energy upgrade industry.  It is important that all contractors undertaking the work outlined in the SWS are properly qualified. There are a number of certification bodies and industry groups that provide verification of an individual’s qualifications to perform certain types of work. This is particularly important in tasks related to heating, ventilating, and air conditioning, electrical systems, and plumbing. Professional contractors who successfully complete the certification process that this work is performed safely and correctly, with fewer callbacks.
