While they "can" be installed in unconditioned spaces, it is not ideal for efficiency purposes. If installed in a basement space that is unintentionally conditioned, it might be fine, but should not be in truly unconditioned spaces like attics or garages, especially in cold climates. Climate would make a difference on this one. Manufacturer will list a temperature. WE should focus on that. Don't install below a temp. that is specified by the equipment manufacturer.
