Sealing a Non-Insulation Contact (IC) Recessed Light With an Integrated LED Retrofit Kit

Select sealants that:

are compatible with their intended surfaces,

allow for differential expansion and contraction between dissimilar materials, and 

are low volatile organic compound (VOC) sealants that meet independent testing and verification protocols

Select an LED trim kit that:

is Energy Star^® qualified or equivalent or better, and safety lab listed (e.g., UL, ETL, etc),

is the correct size for the can light in which it will be installed,

is designed to provide an airtight seal,

provides lighting level quality required for the intended application (e.g., task lighting, hazards lighting, nightlights),

is rated no more than the rated maximum wattage of the recessed light it will be connected to, and

is dimmable if light will be connected to an existing dimmer switch

Remove any material, dirt or debris from the sealing area that will prevent full adhesion of the selected sealant

Install LED light kit in accordance with manufacturer specifications and applicable code (i.e., NFPA 70, NFPA 101, National Electrical Contractors Association/IESNA 500)

Ensure that:

wire is not crimped or crushed,

trim is as tight as possible to the ceiling,

gasket is installed and properly seated, and

light functions as intended

If air movement @50 PA is observed, apply a continuous seal along the outer perimeter of the LED light trim and the ceiling. Apply sufficient pressure to push sealant into any gaps

Permanently remove components and bulbs from job site and recycle or dispose of removed equipment in accordance with local and federal law 

Provide occupants/owners with user's manual, warranty information, installation instructions, and installer contact information
